Mariah Smith Named Next Women's Lacrosse Coach at ÐÔÊÓ½ç

Published: June 9, 2025.

ÐÔÊÓ½ç Assistant Vice President of Athletics  announced that  has been hired as the new head coach of the ÐÔÊÓ½ç women's lacrosse team. Smith was the interim head coach this past spring for the Flyers.

"I am honored and excited to be the next head coach at ÐÔÊÓ½ç," Smith said. "The removal of the interim tag is both humbling and energizing. Now that my position is official, I'm looking forward to taking the program to new heights.

"After a comprehensive national search, we are excited to officially elevate  to the position of head women's lacrosse coach," Assistant Vice President of Athletics  said. "Mariah has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and a deep commitment to the development of our student-athletes during her time as interim coach. We're confident in her ability to continue building a competitive and positive program that reflects the values of ÐÔÊÓ½ç."

Smith led the Flyers this spring to their second most wins (6) in program history. The previous year the Flyers set the record for wins in a season with nine, when Smith was an assistant coach.

"Mariah's commitment and incredible energy she brought to our women's lacrosse team this past year were evident to everyone," Leadership Gift Officer for Athletics  said. "We are delighted to officially announce her as our new head coach, and we're eager to support the team's ongoing journey of growth and excellence under her passionate direction."

"With all the coach turnover that the program has had, I am excited to get going on Year Two to continue to prove to the team that I am here to work hard with them and for them," Smith said. "This program has been in need of a coach that is fully bought in to producing something real here and I am so happy that I get to be the one to do that. There is something really special here with this team and I can't wait for everyone to see where we go."

Before ÐÔÊÓ½ç, Smith was at Aurora University as an assistant coach from 2020-2024, where she also spent time as an interim head coach. As the interim coach she led Aurora to the NACC Conference championship and a NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Flyers have several key pieces coming back next year to also help the stability of the program.

"We have a ton of returning skill and potential on the team as well as a large incoming class that will be sure to make an immediate impact," Smith said. "The biggest goal for next year is to start to build the culture that this program has been longing for - a culture full of student-athletes that want to be here, want to work hard and want to win a conference championship. Shaping the culture in a way that allows the athletes to play hard for each other while having fun playing together will lead to a sustainable and successful program."

As a player, Smith was a four-year starter at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she got a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. She helped lead IWU to two NCAA Tournament appearances. She was the CCIW Defensive Player of the Year in 2018, was a three-time All-CCIW Defender and two-time First Team All-Region defender.
